OK so I visited VIBE Magazines' (my future employer) website about a week ago, and saw something that immediately caught my attention. Don't know what enticed me to watch the video but man was I happy I did. The video, a minute and fifty five second rambling, with Angel Lola Love, a prominent Video (clears throat) Honey. Now if you've never seen or heard of her before it probably is because you have way more important things to do. But me on the other hand, I sometimes lack that ability. Basically VIBE followed her at a very...shall I say..."classy" photo shoot. I'm guessing the topic of the interview was to shed light on a few significant Video Honeys that have changed the "game". But after watching this video and realizing that these are the type of women that in an odd sense represent our black culture, honestly makes me sick to my stomach. As Angel is being interviewed she says around the, :21 sec mark, that VIBE chose 5 women based on their "game changing abilities" and who have turned around and became "icons". What?!?! I almost fell out my seat after she said this. When i think of an Icon, Beyonce comes to my head, Janet Jackson, Alicia Keys, Michelle Obama and countless others. Not a plastic surgery enhanced, big butt girl, shaking her ass in a video!! I'm sorry if this is harsh but I know a lot of you out there think the same thing. Granted, some of these women are possibly educated and only do this for the perks, but I mean seriously, to put yourself in a category with women that actually respect themselves, is a shame. But Ms. Angel Lola Love really took the cake with her antics toward the :26 sec mark. She says,not only do these women appear in videos and as "co-stars to the artists" are in turn role models for young girls (SMH). Young girls like who, the ones standing out on the corners or girls like me in school trying to make something out of myself?? Is this who our role models have turned into? Ass shaking and breast bouncing females?? Please someone help me understand this. Check the video out for yourself.
